Our notes

The free tier of Sage Sole Trader, HMRC-listed for quarterly updates and the tax return, for non-VAT sole traders and landlords. It is genuinely free for one income source, but a sole trader who is also a landlord must pay for the second business instance.

Pros

  • Free with no stated time limit
  • Quarterly updates and tax return HMRC-listed
  • Big-brand support

Cons

  • Only ONE free instance – trading + property needs a paid second instance
  • Tight limits (5 invoices/month, limited AI categorisation)
  • Joint owners: each needs own subscription; single ownership % only
